1309543 Automatic tobacco density control MOLINS MACHINE CO Ltd 12 March 1970 [14 March 1969] 13685/69 Heading G3R The density of end portions of cigarettes cut from a continuous rod is controlled by a scanning device which signal from which controls a trimmer or other tobacco control device. In Fig.3, the density of tobacco in a continuously fed rod 2 to be cut into cigarettes is measured by a radiation gauge 8 the output of which is opposed by that of a further radiation gauge 8A associated with a movable absorption member 14 so that any difference corresponding to deviation of the density from a datum value is applied through an amplifier 24 to operate one or other of two relays 34, 36, according to the sense of deviation, so that an electric motor 38 is operated in the appropriate direction to correct the deviation, e.g. by adjusting means (not shown) which trim the amount of tobacco fed to form the rod. A switch 40 is operated periodically at such a frequency that a measurement of density deviation for the end of each cigarette is applied to a computer 44 which computes the standard deviation and modifies the control signal at 26 so that if the standard deviation is small a lower average density is maintained than if the standard deviation is large. The output of computer 44 may alternatively control the position of member 14 which may be in the form of a cam adjusted by an electric motor. The density may be sampled more or less frequently and the signals integrated to give the mean density of each or a number of cigarettes. A single computer may be associated with each of a number of cigarette machines in turn. After cutting, under- and/or over-density cigarettes may be automatically rejected.
