888,479. Cigarette-mouthpiece making machines. POCOCK, F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [June 28, 1957], No. 20494/57. Class 130. [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for making mouthpiece stubs by a continuous rod process, comprises a measuring device to measure the cross-section of the rod and means controlled by said device to grade the stub lengths cut from the rod according to cross-sectional size. The measuring device 45, Fig. 4, is similar to that described in Specification 888,478, and comprises an orifice through which the continuous rod passes supplied with air under pressure from a diaphragm chamber 42. The rate of leak of air through the orifice varies with the rod cross-section and causes the pressure in chamber 42 to vary, which moves diaphragm 44 from a reference position to close contacts 48 or 49 which closes circuits controlling the position of a pivoted channel member 2, situated beyond the cut-off mechanism, causing the stub lengths to be delivered on to separate conveyers 15 ... 17, Fig. 3, in accordance with size. The member 2 is pivoted at 6 and is normally held in a central position opposite conveyer 16 by springs 18, 19 and is swung sideways to deliver slightly undersize or oversize stub lengths on to the bands 15, 17, respectively by solenoids 24, 25, energized when the diaphragm 44, Fig. 4, closes the contact 48 or 49 respectively. A delay unit may be interposed between the measuring device and the solenoids so that the operation of the device 2 is delayed until the portion of the rod measured by the measuring device has reached the deflecting member 2.
