Abstract

1314826 Cigarette making-machines MOLINS Ltd 22 July 1971 [23 July 1970] 35746/70 Heading A2C A cigarette filler stream trimming unit includes means for throwing the trimmed off tobacco discarded by its trimmer means onto a plate 16, and means for monitoring the force which the discard tobacco applies to the plate 16, as an indication of the mass flow rate of the discard tobacco. As indicated by arrows 14, tobacco discarded by a pair of trimmer discs (2), 4 is thrown by the radial ribs 10 of a rotary brush 8 onto the plate 16 which deflects it downwards, as indicated by arrows 18, towards a trough 20 containing a feed screw 22 which carries it away. The plate 16 has a broad deflector portion 18' and a narrower flexible portion 20', the free end of portion 20' being rigidly mounted on a casing wall 23. Strain gauges 28, bonded to both sides of the flexible portion 20', are connected via a suitable electrical circuit to means for producing a visible indication of the mass flow rate of the discarded tobacco and/or to means for automatically maintaining the mass flow rate of the discarded tobacco substantially constant. Alternatively, the portion 20' may be rigid and be pivotally mounted to the wall 23 for pivotal movement against the action of a spring and form part of a capacitance kind of detector circuit, or the plate 16 may be moveable but held in a substantially fixed position by a restoring force which varies automatically to balance the force of the tobacco on the plate 16, the monitoring system beng sensitive to the magnitude of the restoring force. The plate 16 may be flat, as shown, or may be concave.
