Abstract

1,089,363. Cutting tobacco. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. Feb. 18, 1965 [Feb. 21, 1964], No. 7466/64. Heading A4C. In a tobacco cutting machine, tobacco is fed to and forced through a mouthpiece by and between a first, generally vertical feed band 1 co-operating with a second feed band 2, and the machine includes means for heating the tobacco so that it is cut at a desired temperature. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, tobacco fed from a conveyer 16 into the horizontal run 11 of the second feed band 2 is subjected to the action of air of predetermined temperature and water vapour content, the air being delivered from a supply unit 36 to be directed through apertures 20 in sideplates 18, 19 and through apertures in intermeshing guiding rollers 27, 28. The top of the apparatus is covered so that after the air has given up heat and moisture to the tobacco it returns to the supply unit through pipes 41, 42 after passing through apertured plates 25, 26 at the feed end of the top run 11. Means are provided to heat the feed bands 1, 2. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), a pivoted plate (117) bears on and senses the height of the layer of tobacco on the top run 11 and actuates a transducer (129) to control showering means feeding tobacco on to the top run. The latter embodiment includes inlet (112) and outlet (113) ducts on opposite sides of the feed bands for the passage of the pre-heated and humidified air.
