Abstract
997,689. Cigar-making machines. S. J. SILBERMAN. Feb. 24, 1964 [Feb. 26, 1963], No. 7622/64. Heading A2C. In a cigar-making machine a tobacco feed device includes a longitudinally extending tube 10 (Fig. 2) into which tobacco is fed to be carried along by a plurality of endless bands 21, 20 and 19 which have helical runs 21a, 20a and 19a (Fig. 3) disposed within and extending coaxially along the tube 10. A wrapper sheet W to which adhesive 48 is applied is fed helically into the tube 10 by the band 19 and is wrapped around the tobacco to form a continuous cigar rod 49. The endless bands are guided into and out of the tube 10 by slots 1A-3A and 1B-3B and the tobacco T is initially fed into the tube 10 by a screw device 14. The relative speeds of the screw 14 and bands 19, 20, 21 determine the degree of compactness of the tobacco. A fourth endless band having a helical run 56a (Fig. 11) may be added which runs through inlet and outlet slots 4A and 4B. In a further embodiment (Fig. 14) the tobacco is fed directly to a guide tube 65, in which two endless bands have helical runs corresponding to bands 19 and 20, by co-operating conveyers 17 and 18 slightly inclined towards each other and operating in a trough 66. The tobacco is guided into the tube opening by the conveyers 70 and 80 and by lips 69 on the side walls 68 of the trough.
