DEVICE FOR PRODUCING CONTINUOUS STRINGS OIF TOBACCO FOR .CIGARETTE-MAKING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N 0. 722,746, dated March 1'7, 1903.
Application filed May 4, 1901. Serial No. 58,761. (No model.)
To a/Z whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEF PAUL, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices forProducing Continuous Strings of Tobacco for Cigarette-Making Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My present invention relates to a device for producing a continuous string of tobacco for cigarette-making machines; and the advantage of my invention over existing devices is that the tobacco is conducted into a grooved wheel without the intervention of a transport-belt.
My improved device is extremely siinplein construction and avoids the loss of tobacco incident to all existing constructions in which a transport-belt is used.V
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of part of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same, the hopper and the pressing-wheel being removed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the opposite side of the machine from that shown in Fig. l; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are detail sectional views, Fig. 4 on line 4 4, Fig. 5 on line 5 5, and Fig. 6 on line 66, of Fig. 3.
As is evident from the drawings, the device consists of a hopper d, by which the tobacco is uniformly and evenly fed to the U- shaped channel c, havingeared sides at the top thereof and located in the periphery of a rotating wheel b, a depending tongue d, having a sliding contact with Haring sides of said groove and by which the tobacco is pressed into the channel c, asecond wheel e, coperating with the wheel b to press and form the tobacco fed into the channel c by the hopper a into a continuous string, and a guide-plate j', which slides on lthe bottom of the channel c and conducts without in any way injuring the same the string of tobacco from the channel c to the paper g for forming the cigarettes.
The cigarettes are otherwise produced in the usual manner. By adjusting the wheel e tobacco strings of different thicknesses can be formed. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An apparatus for the formation of strings of tobacco for cigarette-machines comprising in combination with a wheel a U -shaped groove in the peripherybf said wheel, and a. hopper positioned above said Wheel; a curved tongue depending from said hopper and engaging the flaring sides of said groove; a second wheel cooperating with the aforesaid grooved Wheel and a guide-plate having a sliding contact with the bottom of the groove of the above-mentioned wheel; substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Y
2. An apparatus for the formation of strings of tobacco for cigarette-machines, comprising a wheel, a U-shaped channel in the periphery of said wheel and having flaring sides at the top thereof, a hopper positioned above said wheel, a depending tongue engaging the aring sides of said groove, and an adjustable pressing-wheel also engaging said groove.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOSEF PAUL.
