[Class 130] In a tobacco-feeding mechanism in which tobacco is showered through a feed shoot 20 into a guide trough or channel on to a travelling web P, the guide trough comprises a bottom member 22 over which the web P travels, and side members 21, the inner faces 23 of which are progressively inclined with respect to each other from the entrance to the delivery end of the trough, in order to provide a channel of gradually increasing width and to prevent arching of the tobacco on the web. Fig. 2 shows the trough in plan, Figs. 4 and 6 are sections respectively on the lines 4 . . . 4, 6 ... 6 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 3 ... 3. The inclined surfaces start at the bottom of the faces 23 and progressively increase in height towards the delivery end. In order to crimp the edges of the web P to form seals preventing the lateral escape of tobacco shreds, recesses 25, 26 are provided in the members 22, 21, the parts of the side members 21 between the recesses 26 and the inner faces 23 of the members 21 being disposed substantially centrally of the recesses 25, and in or slightly below the plane of the upper surface of the member 22. Openings 30 in the member 22 allow the escape of any tobacco particles which may work around the edges of the web. One of the members 21 is pivoted at 28 on the member 22 to allow access for cleaning. In a modification, Fig. 7, the bottom member comprises a plate 34 carrying side members 32 spaced apart from a central member 33, the faces 35, 36 of which may converge downwardly to facilitate the escape of tobacco particles which work around the edges of the web. The tobacco is showered into the shoot 20 by the mechanism described in Specification 475,593.
