[Class 130] Long and short tobacco shreds are fed by separate mechanisms to a common means arranged to receive or remove tobaccofrom both, to comingle the long and short shreds and to deliver a single stream or shower of the co-mingled shreds. A feed roll 27 showers short shreds S from a hopper 19 between the blades 16 of a rapidly rotating picker and winnower 16, 17 which has removed from a carded roller 6 a layer of long shreds T supplied from a hopper 5. A comb 8 presses the long shreds on to the roller 6 and a pivoted plate 31 lies on the card of that roller to grip any abnormally large lumps of tobacco while pins 17 on the blades 16 tear them up. The winnower co-operates with a curved plate 18 to shower the tobacco on to a conveyer 10, heavier unwanted particles being caught in a removable tray 18a. The conveyer 10 leads to feed rollers 11 .. 13 which shower the tobacco on to the cigarette paper P. The sides of the hopper 19 are adjustable towards or away from each other to determine the width of the shower of the short shreds and deliver a narrower, central stream of tobacco on to the longer shreds to permit these entirely to surround the short shreds in the cigarette.
