Abstract

681,855. Cigarette-making machines. STANGEL, A., and GAMBLE, H. Oct. 9, 1950 [Oct. 21, 1949], No. 27066/49. Class 130. [Also in Groups XVII and XXX] Multiple-length filter tip or other mouthpiece stubs are fed one after another transversely of their lengths, as from a hopper 2, Fig. 1, and by a fluted drum 1, to means such as knives 3 which subdivide them into double-length stubs used in making up cigarettes, the resultant rows of divided pieces being first separated as by transference to a further fluted drum 4 having a shroud 5 with diverging stub guide channels 7, Fig. 5, and then fed by means such as screw conveyers 9 into containers 10. The tip 6 of the shroud 5 transfers the stubs from the drum 1 to the drum 4. Each conveyer 9 co-acts with a vertical feed channel 8 to which the respective guide channel 7 delivers stubs, the bottom portion of the channel 8 being formed as a spring pawl 16, Fig. 6, so as to swing back under excess pressure due to two stubs entering one conveyer tooth recess, and allow one of the stubs to be carried on by the drum 4 for subsequent ejection therefrom. The stubs pass upwards into each container 10, which is in the form of a box having a width just sufficient to accommodate the stubs lengthwise and provided with a removable lid 14, through a passage 11, springs or brushes 12 acting as a non-return valve. Each container 10 is provided with a paper web 13, passing round retractible pins 15 and out of the sides of the container, by means of which the stubs can be later extracted from the filled container when this has been removed and placed upright.
