[Class 130] [Also in Group XVII] In means for feeding tobacco to continuousrod cigarette-making or tobacco-packaging machines, in which the tobacco is compacted by slowing-up the speed of the feeding movement while the tobacco is in a confining passage, the conveyer feeding tobacco to the passage is wholly external to the passage. The tobacco is compressed on the conveyer to a cross-section smaller than that of the passage by a top-guide and by movable side guides, which may be formed by the upstanding limbs of a U-shaped belt. As shown in Fig. 1, tobacco deposited on a conveyer 6, which is folded into U-shape by a, trough 7, is compressed by a top-guide band 8 passing over a fixed shoe 9. A pair of stationary guides 24 lead the tobacco over a bridge 16 into a confining passage 10, the bottom wall of which is formed by a paper web 11 moving at a slower speed than the belt 6. The passage diverges slightly towards its exit. Cooling water or air is circulated through passages 25, 28 in the trough 7 and shoe 9 and the upper surface of the band 8 may engage a cooled element positioned between rollers 30, 31. In modified constructions, (a) the bridge 16 is omitted and the paper web is wholly external of the passage, at the outlet end of which is located a positively driven roller having a concave periphery, and (b) the tobacco passes under a wheel to a topguide formed by a shoe which may be given a rapid vibration of small amplitude.
