A tobacco stream 2, Fig. 1, travelling on a fabric &c. belt 3 or paper strip in the production of a continuous cigarette rod is compressed to form a tobacco rod by an endless steel belt 9 travelling over two discs 10, 11 and the under run of which bears freely on the stream 2 within a tobacco channel 7 between lateral defining walls thereof. The tobacco channel may be of U-section or, in a machine of the kind in which the tobacco stream is formed at one level and passes round a wheel to a higher level for compression and further treatment, Fig. 5 (not shown), comprise rails 37, Fig. 6, as of steel or sheet plastic, under which a paper strip 34 runs on a fabric belt 30 to support the tobacco stream 24 compressed by the steel belt 9<SP>1</SP>. To adjust the position of the belt 9, Fig. 1, as to give along its under run slightly increasing compression to the stream 2, the disc 10 is mounted on an arm 12 pivoting about the axis of the disc 11 which is itself vertically adjustable, the tension of the belt 9 being adjustable by a screw 40. The belt 9 may be driven by a variable-speed chain drive to the disc 11, and its under run may be backed by a presser rail, having portions 16, 17 mutually adjustable at 16<SP>11</SP>, adjustably mounted on the arm 12 at 181 and bearing on the discs 10, 11 at 16<SP>1</SP>, 17<SP>1</SP>. An adjustable scraper 39 for the belt 9 is provided. After compression, the stream 2 passes on to a paper web 21 for further treatment.
