Abstract

433,152. Cigarette-making machines. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, and EDWARDS, W. F. M., 1, Kempsford Gardens, Earl's Court, both in London. Feb. 12, 1934, No. 4641. [Class 130] In forming cigarette filtertips, a length of material comprising layers of crÛpe paper, with or without intervening absorptive layers, is fed intermittently between rollers 2. Strips are severed by a knife 4 and moved transversely by a plunger 6 through a guide 7 on to a paper strip 5 to which paste has been applied at intervals by the mechanism 13. Blades 9 attached to a chain running over inclined sprockets 11 cover the strips during their passage below the tobacco hopper 14, the tobacco deposited on the blades being removed by a reciprocating device 16 provided with cutters 16a and a suction nozzle 16b. The strips 1, the intervening tobacco and the paper wrapper are then formed to the required cross-section in the rod-forming mechanism 18. In a modification the strips are applied to the paper as before, but the tobacco is supplied as a continuous rod from a superposed channel, and severed at intervals. A second modification is described in which a continuous rod of wrapped tipping is produced. The strips severed by the knife 4 are transferred end to end on to the paper 5 which runs in a deepening trough. A similarly-shaped guide presses the strips from above ; forwarding rollers penetrate the guide, and the partlyformed rod is then finished in the mechanism 18.
