Abstract
1332423 Tobacco-smoke filter manufacture F J BURRUS & CIE 19 Aug 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 38908/71 Heading A2C In an apparatus for making tobacco-smoke filters in which a free running filter material is fed into spaces 17 between uniformly spaced, axially aligned, fibrous filter wads 1, 2 travelling on a continuous wrapper strip 3, suction is applied by a device 21, situated upstream of the discharge slot(s) 20 of a filler head 16 and above the wads 1, 2, so as to produce a partial vacuum within the spaces 17 to be filled to aid the complete filling thereof. The wads 1, 2 are deposited in known manner on the wrapper strip 3, previously provided with a thermoplastic adhesive coating on its upper surface, and fixed thereto by heat. The edges of the strip 3 are then bent upwards around the wads 1, 2 to form a U-shape before passing under the suction device 21. After the filling of the spaces 17, surplus filter material is removed by a trimmer 30 and the edges of the strip 3 are brought together and overlapped by a member 43, a suction device 45 removing any free-running filter material remaining between the edges of the strip 3, and said edges are then heat sealed together. A further heat sealer (62) Fig. 8 (not shown) ensures that the strip 3 is stuck to the filter wads 1, 2 around the whole of their circumferences. Finally, the continuous composite filter rod so formed is cut into suitable lengths, the cutter (51) Fig. 1 (not shown) being driven by the main machine via a phase adjustable timing mechanism (52) Fig. 9 (not shown) so as to synchronise it with the feed of the wads 1, 2. A vibrator 23 is provided to facilitate the flow of the free-running material within the filler head 16.
