Abstract

1,219,744. Cigarette making machines. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 10 Feb., 1969 [14 Feb., 1968], No. 7178/69. Heading A2C. Apparatus for producing cigarettes with filter tips of the kind having a chamber containing granular material, e.g. charcoal, comprises means for feeding discrete tubular elements to a filling station, each tubular element consisting of a tobacco section and a hollow tube section of tipping material, e.g. cork paper, defining the chamber, and means for filling the hollow tube sections with the granular material. The discrete tubular elements 28 are produced by apparatus (not shown) that feeds tobacco on to a paper web to make a continuous rod which is cut into lengths each of which corresponds to two cigarettes. These lengths are then spaced apart endwise a predetermined amount and cut lengths of tipping material introduced to span the spaces, being secured by adhesive and rolled over to form the hollow tube sections. The continuous rod so formed is then severed at the middle of each hollow tube section and the middle of each tobacco section whereby successive elements 28 are delivered oppositely oriented. A kicker cam 82 projects the elements on to a grooved, rotating drum 80 and a "turn-around" device 84 ensures that all of the elements are similarly oriented on the drum 80, on which they are held by vacuum, before they are transferred by a grooved wheel 86 to a grooved drum 110. Associated with each groove on the drum 110, in which a cigarette is held by vacuum, is an apertured granule-metering slide 116 movable radially on the upper surface of the drum under the control of a fixed eccentric 117. As the drum rotates, each slide receives a granule charge from a hopper 114 and drops it into the hollow tube section of a cigarette, whereafter the cigarette is transferred to a drum 120 having plungers reciprocable by a stationary face cam 140 to press sealing plugs cut from a rod of cellulose acetate material into the ends of the hollow tube sections. Heat may then be applied to bond the plugs in position, and the finished cigarettes are delivered by a wheel 150 to a belt 152.
