Abstract

1,034,306. To b a c c o smoke filters. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. May 26, 1965 [May 29, 1964; Feb. 3, 1965], Nos. 22389/64 and 4671/65. Heading A2C. Multeiple cigarette-smoke filters are manufactured by asembling quantities of powdered or granular filter material and lengths of filter-plug material in vertical superimposition and wrapping the vertically superimposed materials to form a continuous rod. The granular material, e.g. charcoal, silica, gel, zeolites or activated alumina, preferably of a size between 10 and 40 mesh (British Standard), is fed from a hopper 12 to holes in a wheel 2 rotating over a retaining plate 13. A smaller, upper, rotating wheel 1 has holes for receiving double lengths of filter-plug material made, e.g. of cellulose acetate, viscose, polyolefin fibres or paper, from a pneumatic conveyer 11. The wheels 1 and 2 are provided with teeth 9 and 10 and are driven by a gear 8. The holes in the two wheels coincide at a single point in line with a tube 15. At this point a corresponding hole is provided in the plate 13 and the filter materials are blown into the tube 15 by a nozzle 16. The filter materials are then wrapped in paper which passes over a roller 18 and is heat sealed at 22 to form a continuous rod which is drawn through a conventional garniture 24 by a garniture tape 23. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the wheel 1 is dispensed with and the filter plugs are delivered from the conveyer 11 on to the surface of the wheel 2, which is rotated intermittently, where a reciprocating pusher pushes each one above succeeding holes in the wheel 2 already filled with granular material and a second reciprocating pusher pushes the materials into the tube 15.
