Abstract

1431634 Making dual adsorbent filters BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 5 March 1974 [7 May 1973] 9891/74 Heading A2C Multiple tobacco smoke filters are made by continuously advancing lengthwise a web of paper, bulked-yarn filamentary-tow or like filter material, flattening the web and forming it to substantially U section, delivering metered amounts of particulate material to the web at spaced intervals immediately after its formation to the U section, the metered amounts being thereby deposited into the interior of the web at the base of the U section and between the legs thereof at predetermined intervals, closing the legs of the web about the spaced amounts immediately after their deposition, forming the web into a cylindrical rod, applying a wrapper about the rod and transversely cutting the wrapped rod into lengths each having at least one intermediate portion containing a packet of the particulate material within the web of filter material. As shown cellulose acetate tow is drawn from storage, opened in unit 20 and plasticised by applicator 24. Thereafter it passes into funnel 32 located at the inlet end of a granulator station 34 designed to deposit metered amounts of charcoal, silica gel, ion exchange resins or similar absorbents.
