Abstract

1448964 Tobacco filters BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO Ltd 31 Jan 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 4333/75 Heading A2C Tobacco smoke filters are made by (a) providing a web of filter material which has an elongated axis continuous in its direction of use (b) tensioning the web (c) spreading the web in a direction normal to the axis to a predetermined width (d) cutting the web along a line parallel to the axis to provide first and second sections, each of which has an elongated axis (e) feeding the first section of the web in a first axial direction in a flattened condition to a deposition position (f) delivering amounts of loose particulate material to the first section of the web at the deposition positions in rows extending across the first section, the rows being spaced axially thereof, (g) feeding the second section of the web in a second axial direction to bypass the deposition position and direct the second web section into overlying relation to the deposited particulate material and the first web section whereby the material is positioned at spaced intervals between the first and second sections and (h) forming the first and second sections of the web and the particulate material into a cylindrical filter rod. As shown in Fig. 1 the process may be effected in apparatus including a tow opening, spreading, plasticising and tensioning assembly 12, cutting assembly 14, transporting assemblies 16, 17 for first and second web sections respectively, a particulate material deposition assembly 18, a wrapper feeding assembly 20, a rod-forming assembly 22, and a filter cutting assembly 24. In the example web 26 is a fibrous cellulose acetate tow. The particulate material to be deposited thereon may be finely divided, charcoal, silica gel, volcanic salts, ion-exchange resins or clays. The tow may be plasticised with triacetin. Fig. 2 shows how the cutting edge of wheel 36 mounted on shaft 38 and driven in cooperative relation with roller 34, severs web 26 into first and second sections 28, 30. Web 28 is delivered in a flattened condition to assembly 18 for receipt of particulate material. Fig. 3 illustrates how hopper 50, deposition wheel 52 and vacuum supply means 54 induces particulate material onto web 28.
