[Also in Groups VI and VIII] During feeding of a layered web 1 one or more of the layers are displaced sideways relative to the other layer or layers. Superimposed crepe paper layers 3, 4, 5, Fig. 1, of the web 1 pass separately over a web guide plate 7, the layers 3, 4 being supported by parallel rods 22. Each layer then passes between a respective pair of lateral guide rods 6, 10, Fig. 1A, where it is located laterally at each side by a collar 8 on the rod 6, the collars 8 co-acting with the layers 3, 5 being displaced along their rods, one pair in one direction and the other oppositely, relative to those co-acting with the layer 4 so that the desired relative displacements are obtained. The layers then pass together, with their relative displacements preserved by a stepped guide 23 on each side, to mechanism 100 which cuts off successive strips from the leading end of the web. Single absorbent cellulosic web layers (not shown) interleaved between the layers 3, 4, 5 may respectively be displaced with the layers 3, 5 or both remain undisplaced with the layer 4. In one modification, only the top paper layer is displaced, and in another four paper layers are used each of which is displaced relative to the others. The web is fed by intermittently-acting means 28, undue web tension being avoided by supplementary rubber-covered feeding rollers 11 partially counterbalanced by a weight 12 and bearing on the feed reel 2 of web material. The rollers 11 may be continuously rotated but, as shown, a rod 18 linked to an oscillating lever 19 associated with the means 28 intermittently rotates through a ratchet 17 a sprocket 16 driving the rollers.
