Feeding webs.-Relates to a machine for cutting a web of paper &e. transversely to its length and especially to means for securing a temporary dwell in the feed of the paper in the vicinity of the cutter during the cutting operation. The machine comprises draw-rollers 4 and nipping-rollers 7, both continuously driven, and either of these pairs of rollers is periodically drawn back and rolls over the web during the cutting operation at the same speed as that at which the paper travels. If the nipping-rollers are so operated, a slack is created in the web owing to the continuous feed of the rollers 4. This slack is taken up temporarily pending the return of the roller 7, by a gravitationally or mechanically operated roller 33. If the draw-rollers 4 are reciprocated, the web is drawn intermittently from its roll, and means are provided for disengaging temporarily the nipping-rollers 7. The rollers 7 are mounted on carriages 9 adapted to be withdrawn on rollers 20 by rack-and-pinion gearing 11, 12, operated from gears 13 loose on the shaft 14 of a draw-roller 4, but coupled therewith intermittently through the agency of a cam-actuated friction clutch. Springs 21 serve to return the carriages 9 to their original positions. The web is slit longitudinally by cutting-rollers 6 and severed transversely by the revolving cutter 2 co-acting with the dead knife 3. The severed sheet passes down a slope board 25 to a delivery belt 26, whence it may be collected by hand or by a laying-apparatus such as that described in Specification 26,372/08. The web is clamped during the cutting operation by a weighted clamp 28, the descent of which is controlled by a cam-actuated lever 29. The machine is provided with a measuring-appliance consisting of expanding pulleys 39 as described in Specification 26,151/11, [Class 31(i), Cutting and severing machines &c.]; the clutch mechanism on the shaft 14 for operating the carriages 9 is also described in that Specification.
