Abstract
167,015. Haas, A., and Firth, W. May 10, 1920. Envelopes, making.-In a machine for making envelopes, a web of paper travels continuously past gumming-devices and over drying-rollers, and is then slit longitudinally into two or more strips, which are fed intermittently over one or more beds, while the flaps of the envelopes are formed by punching the strips. The web of paper l, Fig. 1, is drawn from a roll r by means of rollers 3, 4, a line of gum for the closing- flaps of the envelopes being applied to the paper by a gummer x. If necesary, slitting-knives may be attached to the shafts 3, 4 to removeexcess paper from the edges of the web, the excess in the form of strips l<2> being wound on to a roller 10. The web then passes over two series of rollers y, z, to allow the gum time to dry, the rollers being grooved where necessary to prevent the gum from smearing. The rollers x, y, 3, 4 are driven from a longitudinal driving-shaft c through a friction gear k, p, the smaller wheel k being movable over the face of the larger wheel p by means of a lever m to enable the speed of the web to be adjusted. The web next passes between shafts 1, 2 on which are mounted slitting-knives 12, Fig. 8, by which the web is cut into narrower webs or strips, as shown. Creasing- knives 14, 15, 17 are also mounted on the shafts 1, 2, and crease the webs along the lines c<4>, c<5> along which the paper is to be folded. The webs next pass over a roll v<7>, between which and the shafts 1, 2 it is allowed to hang down in loops l<1> to allow subsequent operations to be carried on while the web is moved intermittently. The punches which form the flaps of the envelope by removing various portions of the webs, as shown in Fig. 8, are mounted on transverse table parts or supports b, Fig. 1, carried by an horizontal framing along which they are adjustable. Two of such tables may be used, as shown, when the web is slit into several strips, the various punches, &c. being operated from a common driving-shaft c. The web is drawn along the tables by feed-rolls 18, 19 which are given intermittent rotation by a ratchet-wheel 27 and a pawl 26 operated by an eccentric 20. The web is first perforated at 35, 36, Fig. 8, by means of a puncher 28 operated by a pawl 34 running on an eccentric portion c<1> of the driving-shaft c. It is next slit along lines 44, 45 by means of knives 37 secured to an oscillating shaft 41. The next movement carries it beneath similar knives 49 which make the cuts 50, 51, thus completing the formation of the flaps. Creases 52 which define the side folds are formed by reciprocating blades 55, 56 and the next movement of the web brings it above a pivoted plate 75, oscillated by a vertically-moving rack 73, which folds the flap 46 over on to the body of the envelope. The folded envelope is then detached from the web by a cutter 76 which cuts along a line 77, thus forming an incomplete envelope, shown in Fig. 9, which is conveyed by a travelling band to mechanism for folding the side flaps 53 and the closing-flaps 47. In a modification, the flaps are formed by punching the portions of the web at one operation, and knives may be pro. vided for trimming the closing-flaps to a triangular shape.
