Abstract

663,579. Feeding webs. BATTERSBY, J. E., and MASSON, SCOTT & CO., Ltd. March 17, 1950 [April 2, 1949], No. 9020/49. Class 100 (i). [Also in Group VIII] Apparatus for cutting sheets from webs comprises pad rolls for longitudinally-slit webs and a plurality of cutters for cutting the webs transversely arranged so that the webs can be fed from the rolls to any one or more of the cutters, the feed rolls which feed the longitudinally-slit webs to the respective cutters being mounted so that the relative angular position of the rolls can be adjusted to vary the direction of their common tangent between positions corresponding to favourable feeding conditions for each of the cutters. As shown in Fig. 1 a web a is slit by knives 7, 8 and passes between feed rolls 9, 10 and to separate transverse cutters 2, 3 having helical knives 4 and fixed knives 5. Feed roll 10 is carried on links 11 pivoted to a triangular plate 17 which is pivoted at 20 in the main frame. The common tangent of feed rolls 9, 10 which as shown is directed to the cutter 2, may be varied by causing plate 17 to move clockwise about pivot 20, the roll 10 then moving to the right. Movement of plate 17 is effected by means of a hydraulic cylinder 21. When the roll 10 has been moved some distance to the right abutment means, not shown, on a link 11 and the plate 17 come into contact and further clockwise movement of plate 17 causes the roll 10 to be raised out of contact with roll 9, thus interrupting the feed of the web.
