[Also in Group VIII] A continuous laminated band for making cigarette plugs is formed by cutting pieces 20a, b, c of uniform length from a transversely crÛped paper band 16 and interconnecting said pieces or connecting them to a backing strip to form a band in which the crÛping is in the longitudinal direction of the band. In Fig. 2 the pieces of crÛpe paper cut from the moving band 16 by a knife 21 are attached to a moving gummed band 10 of tissue paper, gauze, or a thin sheet of cellulose wadding, nitrocellular sheet, vegetable parchment, or felted or woven material. Two or more of the resulting continuous bands may be formed into a multi-ply band, interleaved with fibrous absorbent material. In Fig. 5 the band is formed by butting the pieces of crepe paper end to end in a number of layers so that the junctions in adjacent layers do not overlap, the edges of the pieces being attached by sewing, crimping, or by adhesive to the adjacent layers. Each layer may consist of single or double pieces, and in Fig. 6 the edges of the pieces are overlapped and attached to each other.
