A cigarette filter tip or other filter comprises a tubular sheath, which may be of longitudinally butt-jointed thick paper 31, Fig. 10, surrounded by longitudinally lap-jointed thin paper 11, and a core of creped paper or cellulose wadding 14 with its normal corrugations extending approximately perpendicular to the sheath axis and secondary corrugations extending transversely thereof. One or more layers of paper or wadding 14 may be used, bunched as shown or spirally wound, and interleaved if desired with a layer or layers of cotton wool, wool, silk, cotton, asbestos, cellulose acetate or viscose. The secondary corrugations may be produced by notches in the edge of the blade 25, Fig. 3, used to form the normal corrugations by scraping partially dried paper pulp 22 from a rotating roller 24, the pulp passing on to a conveyer 26 whereon it is sub-divided by knives 27. Alternatively, the scraped-off band of pulp may be corrugated by passing it between knurled rollers. Filter tips according to the invention may be made on a machine analagous to a continuousrod cigarette-making machine, a web, if necessary preformed to shape, of one or more strips of core material taking the place of the tobacco filler and means being incorporated to feed two superposed wrappers to the garniture if it is desired to form the sheath as in Fig. 10.
