Abstract

A cigarette tip consists of a bundle of between 3500 and 120,000 longitudinally-extending continuous polyolefin, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, filaments of between 0.5 and 16 denier having up to 40 crimps per inch of the filaments before crimping, and which may be heat-bonded at random points of contact. The polyolefin has a molecular weight between 10,000 and 1,000,000 and a softening-point between 85 DEG and 160 DEG C. and the tips may be made by fluffing up a tow of the filaments, compacting it, wrapping it in paper of 0.08 to 0.15 mm. thickness and cutting it into segments. The filaments are initially crimped uniformly to an amplitude between 0.1 and 0.01 inch in "stuffing-box" or "gear" type textile tow crimping devices. The paper wrapper may be either laminates of thin paper, or coated cigarette paper, and is dispensed with if the filaments are bonded. Quantitative process examples are given.
