Abstract

1,218,848. Reconstituted tobacco. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. 26 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 56046/68. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D2] A process for treating tobacco comprises: (1) contacting tobacco plant parts with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal phosphate or ammonium phosphate or a mixture thereof for 5 minutes to 24 hours at 50-100‹C., in an amount to provide 1-50% phosphate by weight of the amount of tobacco, to form a pulp comprising the parenchymous cells or tissue, the fibro-vascular bundles, and the pectins released from the tobacco; (2) straining the resultant pulp to remove the fibro-vascular bundles, the strainer used having a plurality of openings one dimension of each of which is no larger than # inch and no smaller than 1/50 inch and no dimension of which is less than 1/50 inch; and (3) forming the resulting material into a sheet. The preferred phosphate is diammonium phosphate, and during the treatment the pH of the pulp is preferably maintained between 8 and 9 by the addition of aqueous ammonia. The strainer preferably has circular openings but may alternatively have long slits. Any tobacco stems or stalks used should preferably be of such a size, e.g. not less than “ inch in length, that at least 95% will be retained by a 20 mesh screen. The resulting product can be employed as a cigar wrapper or, by applying tobacco solubles to the finished sheet, be employed as a base for reconstituted tobacco. The parenchymous cell material, with accompanying pectins, could also be used by the paper industry as a beater additive to increase the wet strength of paper replacing guar gum and similar materials.
