Abstract

1306433 Dehydrated cellulose UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 Feb 1970 [29 May 1969] 9561/70 Heading C3A [Also in Division C1] Natural or regenerated cellulose fibres, filaments, yarns or textile materials made therefrom are dehydrated by subjecting them to the action of a phosphoric acid solution of up to 50% by volume concentration and then heating the acid treated product in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing at least 15% by volume of ammonia, at a temperature in the range of from 100- 350‹ C. for a period of time sufficient to dehydrate the product by causing it to undergo a weight loss of from 20% to 50% based on the weight of the starting material before acid treatment. The phosphoric acid preferably has a concentration of from 1-50% by volume, and it preferably is an aqueous solution. The non- oxidizing atmosphere may contain an inert gas, e.g. N 2 , in an amount not exceeding 85% by volume. The material obtained may be subjected to further carbonization or graphitization, e.g. by heating to 950‹ C. for 4 mins. in an atmosphere of nitrogen.
