Abstract
1313853 Carbon fibres NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 12 May 1970 [15 May 1969] 24830/69 Addition to 1168619 Heading C1A In producing carbon fibres synthetic organic polymeric fibre material, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, aromatic polyester, or polyvinylalcohol, which has been oxidized by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temp. below the mp. of the fibre or below the temp. at which the fibre would be destroyed, is drawn into a furnace containing a non-oxidizing atmosphere and in which the temp. adjacent the furnace inlet and throughout the majority of the furnace volume is at least 800‹ C., the length of the furnace being sufficient to permit the oxidized fibre to be carbonized during its passage through the furnace. Preferably the fibre is drawn into the furnace at a rate not less than 14 ft./hour and not more than the rate at which the fibre breaks. The central region of the furnace may be maintained at 1500‹ C. The oxidized fibre may be drawn into the central region not more than 1À5 mins. after entering the furnace, and may remain in the central region for at least 45 seconds. The fibre is preferably drawn into the furnace at a rate not greater than 440 ft./ hour and may remain in the central regions for not more than 30 mins. If desired, the fibre may be held stationary for a period in the central zone.
