Abstract

1332789 Knitted fabric COURTAULDS Ltd 19 April 1971 [30 Jan 19701 4544/70 Heading D1K [Also in Division Cl] A knitted carbon fabric is obtained by knitting a fabric from tow or yarn comprising filaments or fibres of oxidised polyacrylonitrile i.e. filaments consisting wholly or mainly of polyacrylonitrile which filaments have been heated in an atmosphere of air or other oxidising gas at a temperature in the range 200- 300‹C under various conditions of time and tension, and carbonising this fabric by heating at a temperature above 1000‹C in an inert atmosphere. The fabric may be further heated - graphitised - by heating at a temperature not less than 2000‹C in an inert atmosphere. The fabric may be knitted into a desired shape. The fibre used may be an untwisted tow, and the fibre may be knitted under tension.
