Abstract
A carbon or graphite article is prepared by shredding a carbon or graphite textile to form a fibrous mass consisting of short lengths of randomly oriented carbon or graphite fibres, mixing said fibres with a carbonizable binder, pressure shaping the resulting mixture and heating to carbonize or graphitize the binder. The carbon textile may be obtained from strands, skeins, ropes, fabrics and batting pads, and the graphite textile from yarns, braids, felts, woven or knitted fabrics. The binder may comprise a phenolic resin, a pitch, an epoxy resin, furfural, furfuryl alcohol or a combination thereof.
