Abstract
1,257,313. Carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 14 May, 1969 [15 May, 1968],No. 23016/68. Heading C1A. Carbon filaments having a straight configuration are produced by heating carbon filaments having a curved or kinked configuration whilst restraining them into a straight configuration, the heating being at a temperature not less than that at which the curved or kinked filaments were carbonized or graphitized. The heating is preferably for a period of at least one minute. If desired the filaments produced may be further heated in the straight configuration at a temperature of not less than 2000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere to effect graphitization. The fibres may be restrained by being placed in grooves in a carbon black, or alternatively the kinked fibres may be heated rapidly and passed continuously through the carbonizing and the graphitizing furnace.
