Abstract

1316844 Carbon fibres UNION CARBIDE CORP 30 April 1970 [30 July 1969] 20818/70 Heading C1A Carbon fibres are produced by carbonizing partially carbonized fibres of cellulosic origin at 1900‹ to 2100‹ C. while under tension sufficient to make the resultant fibres 5% longer than if they had been carbonized free of stress. The partially carbonized fibres may be produced by heating fibres of cellulosic origin at about 150‹ to 350‹ C., or at about 100‹ to 350‹ C. in the presence of a carbonizing aid, such as phosphoric acid. The resultant fibres may be graphitized by heating to 2900‹ C. under a force sufficient to stretch the fibre permanently. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,093,084.
