Abstract

1,148,874. Carbon fibres. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 15 June, 1966 [15 March, 1965], No. 10779/65. Heading C1A. Carbon fibres are produced by heating polyacrylonitrile fibres in a non-oxidizing atmosphere from ambient to a temperature of 1000‹ C. over a period of 2-24 hours whilst the fibres are held under a tension sufficient to cause the polyacrylonitrile fibres to elongate from their initial length so that the carbon fibres produced from them are of greater length than the original polyacrylonitrile fibres. Preferably the non-oxidizing atmosphere is a vacuum or hydrogen and the carbon fibres produced may be subjected to a further heat treatment wherein they are heated to a temperature of 1500‹ C. in not less than 2 hours followed by further heating to a higher temperature not exceeding 3300‹ C. in a non- oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. argon. The further heat treatment may be performed as a separate step and the fibres may be tensioned during this step so that they elongate even more during this treatment. The term polyacrylonitrile fibres is used in the Specification to also mean, copolymers or terpolymers of acrylonitrile with other monomers, e.g. methyl methaorylate or vinyl acetate, either alone or to which have been added polymers compatible with them, e.g. phenolic resins, or Friedel-Crafts condensates.
