Abstract

1,215,005. Carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 22 April, 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8434/67. Heading ClA. Continuous carbon filaments are made by (a) passing a tow of man-made organic filaments through a first zone at 200-300‹ C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen, air, or air enriched with oxygen, the residence time being less than 12 hours; (b) passing the tow through a second zone containing an inert atmosphere, most of which zone is at above 1000‹ C., at such a rate that the maximum temperature is maintained for between 30 mins. and 4 hrs. The filaments may be further heated in an inert atmosphere at below 300‹ C/hr. between 1000‹ C. and 1700‹ C., and the temperature then maintained between 1500‹ C. and 1700‹ C. for not more than 3 hours. Graphitization may be effected by further heating to at least 2000‹ C., preferably at 1000‹ C/hour when above 1700‹ C., and maintaining it at the maximum temperature for from 30 mins. to 3 hrs. The length of the tow is preferably maintained constant in the first heating zone, and controlled in the second so that the ratio of entering: leaving lengths is from 1: 0-8 to 1: 1-2. In the third and fourth heatings, the length ratio may be controlled to from 1:0-9 to 1:1-1. The atmospheres are preferably changed frequently to carry away degradation products. The inert atmosphere may be argon, nitrogen or hydrogen.
