Abstract

1,224,884. Carbon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 2 Aug., 1968 [4 Aug., 1967], No. 35938/67. Heading C1A. Carbon filaments are produced by heating organic filamentary material under tension at a temperature between 150‹ and 200‹ C. in an atmosphere of O 3 and O 2 and then heating at a temperature # 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The gas mixture used in the first stage can be ozonized oxygen, if desired diluted with, e.g. N 2 . In the second stage, the filaments are heated without tension being applied. If graphite carbon is required a temperature of at least 2000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere is employed. Organic filamentary material can be cellulosic, polyamide, polyester filaments, but preferably polyacrylonitrile. The process may be carried out by a batch or continuous method.
