Abstract
1,242,388. Carbon filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 24 Oct., 1968 [11 Aug., 1967], No. 36976/67. Heading C1A. Carbon filaments are produced by passing a tow of organic filaments e.g. polyacrylonitrile continuously through a pre-heating zone containing an atmosphere of air, air enriched with oxygen, or nitrogen maintained at a temperature of between 200‹ and 300‹ C., passing the tow under tension over free-running rollers in a main heating zone at a temperature of between 200‹ and 300‹ C. in a similar atmosphere and finally passing the tow through a carbonizing zone containing an inert atmosphere and maintained at a temperature in excess of 1000‹ C. but less than 2000‹ C. If desired, the filaments may be graphitized by passing the tow through an additional heating zone maintained at a temperature in excess of 2000‹ C.
