Abstract

Carbon filaments are produced by feeding organic filamentary material, which has been treated at 200-300‹ C. in air, air enriched with oxygen, oxidizing atmosphere or nitrogen, into a receptacle, e.g. a carbon boat, in layers of coils and causing the loaded receptacle to travel through a heating zone containing an inert atmosphere and heated to not less than 1000‹ C. to carbonize the organic filamentary material. The heating zone is preferably a large aperture tunnel furnace through which successive open-ended receptacles which are loaded continuously from one boat to another are pushed. The temperature is preferably graded through the heating zone so that the inlet end is cooler than the outlet end. Mechanical means for moving the receptacles may be installed at the cool end of the heating zone. The organic filamentary material may comprise filaments consisting of cellulosic, polyamide or polyester filaments preferably filaments of polyacrylonitrile. The filaments may be further graphitized by heating in an inert atmosphere to 2000‹ C. preferably greater than 2500‹ C.
