Abstract
1,188,146. Carbon fibres. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 10 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 31710/67. Addition to 1,156,041. Heading C1A. A carbon fibre is made by the pyrolysis of extruded para-polyphenylene in an inert atmosphere. The green fibre is produced by extrusion through a die heated to 100‹ to 550‹ F., preferably 485‹ to 515‹ F., under a pressure of from 10,000 to 100,000 p.s.i. An inert filler, preferably graphite, may be added. Three examples of the preparation of green fibres are given, (i) extrusion of a 1/16th inch fibre at 500‹ Œ 10‹ F. under 50,000 p.s.i., (ii) a 3 mil fibre under the same conditions, (iii) a 3 mil fibre containing 5% by weight of graphite under the same conditions. A fourth example gives the pyrolysis of the fibre obtained in Example (ii) at 1000‹ C. The fibres obtained have a tensile strength of 20,000 p.s.i. (minimum) and an elastic modulus above 5 Î 10<SP>7</SP> p.s.i.
