Abstract
1,212,623. Electro-phoretic production of reinforced materials. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug.7, 1969 [Aug.7, 1968] No.37602/68. Heading C7B. In a method of making a fibre-reinforced material, filamentary material is electro-phoretically coated with matrix material in powder form, and lengths of the coated filamentary material, which has a higher elastic modulus than the matrix material, are compacted together to form a composite of matrix material reinforced with the filamentary material, e.g. steel wire may be coated with copper from a suspension comprising acetone, copper, powder, ethyl cellulose and lactic acid, using as cathode a titanium foil cylinder, the wire then being passed through a furnace having a hydrogen/nitrogen atmosphere, cut into lengths, packed into a copper foil sheath and subjected to hot-die-pressing in a vacuum chamber. Non-conductive fibres can be used when provided with an electrically conductive surface covering. Filaments used may be fibres of boron or carbon.
