Abstract

1487942 Diaphragms UNION CARBIDE CORP 20 Sept 1974 [21 Sept 1973] 41022/74 Heading H4J A conical loud-speaker diaphragm comprises a carbonaceous fibrous web of carbon fibres and a resin, the fibres constituting 30--70% of the volume of the diaphragm. The diaphragm has a Young's modulus in the range 4À4 Î 10<SP>10</SP> dynes/ cm.<SP>2</SP>-220 x 10<SP>10</SP> dynes/cm.<SP>2</SP>, a density between 0À8 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP> and 1À7 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP> and a sonic velocity in the range 2À5 Î 10<SP>5</SP> cm./sec. to 11 Î 10<SP>5</SP> cm./sec. The resin may be selected from the group consisting of epoxy, furane, phenolic and melamine. The carbon fibres may comprise staple carbon fibres of length 0À25 inch. Standard techniques may be used for producing and shaping the diaphragms, i.e. a sheet of resin impregnated fibres may be produced using known paper making techniques and the sheet then formed into a conical shape using conventional techniques. Alternatively the diaphragm may be formed by blowing carbon staple fibres on to a preshaped screen, and then adding the resin. The thickness of the diaphragm may lie in the range 0À005-0À025 inch.
