1330485 Carbon fibre reinforced moulding A N ANTONOV L P MIKHAILOVA B V ABROSIMOV A I ZINCHENKO K E NOSCHENKO and E T ZARECHENSKY 16 Oct 1970 49334/70 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Carbon fibres that have been impregnated with one or more thermosetting resins are mixed with 10-30% by total weight of synthetic fibres and moulded under heat and pressure to form a corrosion resistant composite. The carbon fibres, comprising 40-60% by weight, may be produced by graphitizing or partially or fully carbonizing cellulose, polyacrylonitrile or polyvinyl chloride fibres at 500 to 3000‹ C. They are impregnated with an acetone or ethyl alcohol solution of one or more of the thermosetting resins obtained from furan, furfural-acetone-phenol-pentadiol, hexamethyleneamine-furfural cumarone-indone, or acenapthylene-phenol-formaldehyde. The solution may also contain one or more thermoplastic resins, e.g. fluoro or chloro derivatives of polyolefins, cellulose ethers and chlorinated rubbers, and benzenesulphonic acid or hexamethylenediamine as a solidifying agent. The total of resin plus solidifying agent may comprise 10-25% by weight of the composite. The synthetic fibres are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol (which may be partly dehydrogenated), polyacrylonitrile, perchlorovinyl or a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile. The impregnated carbon fibres were dried in air atroom temperature, mixedwith synthetic fibres and moulded at a pressure of 50-500 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>. and a temperature of 100-250‹ C. for 1-1À5 minutes per mm. of thickness of the composite. The composite may be cooled under pressure, removed from the mould and heated in chlorinated napthalene to 59-150‹ C. above the moulding temperature for 1 minute per mm. of thickness.
