Abstract
1,130,304. Flexible graphite material. FILIAL VSESOJUZNOGO ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA ELEKTROTEKHNIKI. 12 Jan., 1966, No. 1414/66. .Heading C1A. [Also in Division H1] Flexible graphite material is made from rayon cord by twining strands of the cord into braids, impregnating the braids with a solution of a fire-retarding agent, e.g. diammonium hydrogen phosphate, drying the braids, and then heating the braids to cause carbonization . and graphitization. The impregnated braids may be heated in a furnace and a gaseous mixture of chlorine and fluorine is fed into the furnace while the temperature is being raised from 2000‹ C. to the graphitizing temperature of at least 2880‹ C. and while the material is being cooled from 1800-1500‹ C. The flexible graphite material so made may then be subject to additional heat treatment in thepresence of a boron compound at a temperature of 2800- 3000‹ C. until the material is saturated with boron. Alternatively, the rayon cord braids may be subjected to a heat treatment in the presence of a boron compound.
