Abstract
1,228,910. Phenolic resin fibres. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. 29 Aug., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 42539/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] Fibres are manufactured by mixing phenol either with hexamine at a temperature high enough to decompose the hexamine, or with formaldehyde and ammonia, and extruding the mixture into filaments. Filaments so made may be carbonized by heating in an inert atmosphere and subsequently heating the carbonized fibre to a temp. higher than the carbonization temp. (see Division C1). The mixture may contain 80-90% by weight of phenol, the balance being hexamine and these two may be mixed at 100‹ to 200‹ C. The mixture may be extruded at 100‹ to 150‹ C. into, for example, an inert atmosphere at a pressure of 5 p.s.i.g. to 10 p.s.i.g.; the fibres being carbonized in two stages, being heated in the first stage to a temp. in the range 100‹ to 350‹ C. at a rate from 1-2‹ C. per minute.
