Abstract

1453409 SiC bodies HOOGOVENS IJMUIDEN BV 22 Sept 1975 [4 Oct 1974] 38800/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] A refractory article is made by shaping, and then heating on a reducing environment, a mixture containing (1) refractory grain material (more than 50% SiC); (2) powdered Si, (3) a binder containing the pitch and 30-50% wt. of the oil having viscosity less than 15 c.p. at 20‹C., the grain (1) constituting 80-90% wt. of the total mixture, and the amount of Si (2) being substantially stoichiometric to the amount of reactive carbon provided by binder (3) on said heating. Cellulose fibre may be incorporated in the binder to ensure that the carbon residue retains a polymeric structure. Suitably, the Si has grain dimensions less than 0À1 mm., the wt. ratio of binder to Si is 0À8 : 1 to 3À0 : 1 and the article has a temperature of 1305‹-1400‹C. during heating.
