Abstract

1469768 Ceramic materials LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 July 1974 [4 Sept 1973] 41406/73 Headings CIJ and C1A [Also in Division C7] A ceramic material is produced by sintering, at an elevated temperature and in a protective environment, a mixture containing particulate silicon nitride, and a further particulate refractory material, the further particulate material chemically combining with the silicon nitride to produce the required ceramic material, wherein the mixture also contains carbon at the elevated temperature. The carbon may be introduced into the mixture as a carbon compound decomposable on heating, e.g. carbohydrate or organic binding agent. The further particulate material may be alumina, which may be introduced into the mixture as a compound decomposable to alumina on heating, e.g. aluminium hydroxide. In an example, a mixture of silicon nitride and alumina in the molar ratio of 1 : <SP>4</SP>/ 3 containing 2 wt. per cent graphite was heated in N 2 to give a product containing about 10% free Al 2 O 3 with a trace of α-phase Si 3 N 4 , the balance being silicon aluminium oxynitride.
