Abstract

1349527 Ceramic composition CORNING GLASS WORKS 4 June 1971 [12 June 1970] 18994/71 Heading C1J Ceramic, fibrous or porous materials may be bonded by (1) mixing with 3-75 wt. per cent silicate solution containing 1 to 12 moles of SiO 2 per litre and having a pH of at least 10 and a gelating agent comprising (a) either MgO or MgO co-fused with a material which does not cause gelation or (b) at least one of the compounds formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, glyoxal, formamide, methyl formate, methyl acetate, ethyl formate or acetate, (ii) shaping the mixture, (iii) reacting the gelating agent with the silicate for a sufficient length of time to reduce the pH and polymerize the silicate, and optionally (iv) sintering the shape. The material to be bonded may be metallic oxides, carbides, borides, silicides, nitrides, inorganic fibres, e.g. asbestos, organic fibres, e.g. cellulose, metals and alloys and synthetic organic polymers. The material co-fused with MgO may be Al 2 O 3 , Cr 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 , La 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , EuO 2 , MoO 3 , Ta 2 O 5 , WO 3 , petalite, lipidolite, and/or spodumene. The silicate solution may be derived from powdered silicate glass, alkali metal silicates, organic ammonium silicate or colloidal silica.
