Abstract

1285662 Porous carbon bodies SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT GmbH 12 Jan 1970 [14 Jan 1969] 1482/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and G6] A porous non-graphite carbon body is obtained by the carbonization of a foamed synthetic resin and contains boron carbide in powder form homogeneously distributed therein. The body preferably contains from 1 to 50% by wt. of boron carbide. The above body may be produced by mixing a synthetic resin with boron carbide powder, foaming and curing the mixture so formed to produce a foamed synthetic plastics body and then carbonizing the foamed body by heating in the absence of oxygen at a temperature insufficient for graphitization to occur. The preferred resin is phenolformaldehyde. The body produced may be used as a screening shield in a nuclear reactor.
