Abstract

1,202,739. Carbon electrodes. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 5 Oct., 1967 [19 Oct., 1966], No. 35693/69. Divided out of 1,202,738. Heading CIA. [Also in Division C5] A carbon electrode is produced from a " non- puffing" " petroleum coke, defined as a coke which when calcined, mixed with a binder, and then baked to 1000‹ C. exhibits no measurable abnormal thermal expansion on graphitizing, by heating such coke in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temp. of at least 2000‹ C., cooling the heated coke to a temp. less than 200‹ C., e.g. ambient temp., forming a filler comprising at least 20% by weight of the cooled product having a particle size greater than 35 mesh Tyler, the remainder being, for example, petroleum coke flow, and mixing this filler with a carbonaceous binder, e.g. pitch, shaping into an article, and then heating this article at a temp. of at least 500‹ C. to carbonize the binder. Preferably, the filler contains 20-70% by weight of the cooled treated coke, which coke may have a particle size greater than 6 mesh and smaller than ¥ of an inch but which is preferably less than ¢ inch. The product may be obtained as a graphite body by heating to a temp. of at least 2000‹ C. in the final step. The product may be a cylindrical graphite body having a minimum diameter of 14 inches and a minimum length of 5 feet.
