Abstract

An improved process for producing graphite bodies having low coefficients of longitudinal thermal expansion, which comprises mixing an oriented coke with a carbonizable thermoplastic binder, extruding the resulting mixture to obtain the desired shape, and then carbonizing and graphitizing the article configured to produce a body graphite, in which the improvement comprises using a coke that has been prepared by continuously transforming a carbonaceous fish that has a mesophase content of between 40 weight percent and 90 weight percent, in a shaped body, said fish being a which under stable conditions forms a mass mesophase having large coalesced zones of over one hundred microns, heating the body configured in an oxidizing atmosphere at a sufficiently high temperature and for a period of time long enough to heat-harden the body to a degree which will allow him to keep his fo rms by heating it to higher temperatures, and then further heating the heat-hardened body in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere to a temperature high enough to produce a highly oriented coke.
