Abstract
1381203 Expanding tobacco BAT CIGARETTEN-FABRIKEN GmbH 13 Dec 1972 [17 Dec 1971] 57505/72 Heading A2C The filling capacity of tobacco is increased by subjecting tobacco with a moisture content greater than or equal to 19% to a reduction of pressure of at least 20% of the initial pressure with a pressure change velocity of at least 2% of the instantaneous pressure per second and fixing the condition of the tobacco by drying to a moisture content of less than 20%, the drop in pressure not being allowed to take place so rapidly that the cells are burst or puffed out because of interior overpressure. The pressure to which the tobacco is subjected may be reduced from atmospheric to below atmospheric with the drying preferably being effected at the lower pressure, or the pressure may be reduced from above atmospheric (e.g. 1.5 or 2 atmospheres absolute) down to atmospheric in which case the initial higher pressure must be built up gradually and/or maintained over a sufficiently long period to ensure saturation of the tobacco cells with gases before the pressure reduction is effected, Where the moisture content of the tobacco is relatively low, e.g. below 25%, it may be advantageous to increase the flexibility of the cell walls of the tobacco by raising its temperature to say 40-50‹C before effecting the pressure reduction.
