Abstract
In the operation of a blast furnace the optimum blast pressure and top gas condition (as determined generally by its temperature but alternatively by its composition) for any given charge and operating practice are first determined, and are thereafter maintained by controlling the blast rate and the moisture content increased, when blast pressure and/or top gas temperature are above optimum. The amount by which the controllable factors are increased or decreased may be proportional to the deviation of blast pressure or top gas temperature from the optimum, but when blast pressure is high the resultant reduction in blast rate should be double that for a similar variation of pressure below the optimum.
